Sontag: Regarding the Torture of Others
Sontag's new peice on Abu Gate in the NYT Magazine,
Regarding the Torture of Others, is quite powerful and eloquent. Especially enlightening is the parallel she draws between the photos showing torture of the Iraqi prisoners and historical photos of people involved with public lychings in the South. They share the sense that the brutal acts committed against the despised class are sanctioned and even celebrated by the dominant culture. It is a chilling reminder that Bush's claim that the wickedness at Abu and other prisons doesn't reflect "the heart of America," ignores history, and disowns the lessons we can take from our past.
